NASPA: Building a Sense of Home When Constructing Residence Halls
At the 2010 NASPA Conference, Treanor Architects' Nadia Zhiri and the University of Kansas' Marlesa Rooney, PhD and J William Carswell, PA presented a new conceptual model for designing residence halls that couples contemporary design knowledge with social and cultural research about college student development and student needs. The application of these concepts to residence hall remodeling and new construction enables students to increase their sense-of-home. The model is based on doctoral level architecture research, college housing officers’ codified information, architects’ case-studies experiences, and social-science research regarding college students.
