Ridget Top Apartments wins KPA Award

On Friday, May 9, the Ridge Top Aparments rehabilitation was honored with the Honor Award for Excellence in Rehabiltation at the Kansas Preservation Alliance's 2014 Awards for Excellence.

The Ridge Top Apartments, located at the Western Branch, National Home for Disabled Veterans National Historic Landmark, rehabilitation project adapted four historic domiciliary buildings – the first constructed at the Western Branch in 1866 – into one- and two-bedroom apartments for low-income, veteran transitional housing. Additionally, a historic physician's residence was rehabilitated for use as a single family rental home.

From the Empire State Building to the Eiffel Tower, some buildings captivate a city or even a nation. Over time, these iconic buildings become synonymous with the place they represent.

They are the buildings that, if you mention their name, people know what you’re talking about,” says Vance Kelley, AIA, principal in Treanor Architects' Historic Preservation studio. They are buildings that show up on television, in books and memories. They are, often, the ones worth preserving.

A building doesn’t need to be world-famous to be “iconic” to its community. Here are a few of the ways that a building—perhaps one in your community— can take on a life greater than the sum of its parts.

Senator Roberts Nominates Kansas Architect to U.S. Senate Curatorial Advisory Board

Todd RenyerTodd Renyer has a new responsibility in addition to his role as project manager and historic preservation architect at Treanor Architects.

Renyer was appointed to the U.S. Senate Curatorial Advisory Board. He was nominated by Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., who is one of the five-member U.S. Senate Commission on Art. In addition to Roberts, the other commission members are Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Sens. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. and Patrick Leahy, D-Vt.

The U.S. Senate Curatorial Advisory Board is composed of historians, curators, architects, preservationists, and experts from institutions across the nation. The board is responsible for advising and assisting the Senate Commission on Art with acquiring, preserving, restoring, and replacing historical documents, artifacts, and works of art relating to the Senate wing of the Capitol and the Senate office buildings. read more
